Contact KLM CARES at least 48 hours before departure if you want to:
- Arrange assistance at the airport during boarding, disembarking and/or transferring
- Bring your own (electric) wheelchair (scooter), walker or crutches or use a cabin wheelchair
- Bring special medical equipment: always contact KLM CARES when travelling with medical equipment in your hand baggage or check-in baggage, even if you are not using the equipment onboard
- Bring your assistance dog into the cabin
- Use an extended leg rest for a leg that needs to stay in a horizontal position (in a cast). On KLM flights within Europe, 2 extra seats need to be booked in Economy Class. On intercontinental KLM flights, you need to travel in Business Class.
- KLM CARES can not guarantee any service if this is less than 48 hours before departure.

Important before departure
- It is not possible to arrange assistance for passengers with a language barrier, fear of flight or first time travellers.
- You need to request special assistance (and book your flight) at least 48 hours before departure. If your flight will be operated by one of our partners, please request special assistance from this airline. KLM will transport your own wheelchair (scooter) or walker – free of charge.
- You must check in at the airport at least half an hour before the standard check-in time. If departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, please check in at desk 16. If you are using an electrically powered wheelchair, please check in 1 hour earlier.
- Please go to the gate at the time indicated on your boarding pass.
- Please know that the KLM crew cannot provide assistance during all stages of your trip. Make sure you have someone to travel with you should you require assistance throughout your entire journey.

Bring your own wheelchair
If you are bringing your own wheelchair, please make sure you contact us at least 48 hours before your departure. We will look into the possibilities and make a reservation for you right away. The number of (electric) wheelchairs we can transport is limited.
Your wheelchair needs to be transported as check-in baggage in upright position to avoid damage and spilling of batteries.

- Foldable onboard wheelchair: available on board of all KLM and KLM Cityhopper aircraft.
- Toilet facilities: wheelchair accessible toilets are available on all KLM’s Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A330 aircraft. Our Boeing 737, Boeing 747, Embraer 190 and Fokker 70 aircraft have a foldaway curtain to enlarge the lavatory space. Our staff will help find your way to and from the toilet. Unfortunately, we cannot assist you in the toilet area.
- Toilet handles: the toilets onboard of all our KLM aircraft are equipped with toilet handles.
- Moveable armrests: in all our aircraft we have a number of aisle and middle seats that have moveable armrests, so you can transfer more easily into your seat. The number and locations of movable aisle armrest seats may vary by aircraft type.
- Special seating solutions such as an Orthotic Positioning Device will always be reviewed by our Flight Standards & Compliance department to see if the seating solution is compliant with applicable regulations as defined by FAA. If it does not comply, unfortunately it cannot be accepted on board. Please make your request at least 2 working days prior to departure by calling KLM CARES.
Medical Information Forms
If one of the descriptions below applies to you, please consult your physician prior to travel. In some cases, you or your travel agent must complete Medical Information Form A and your doctor must complete and sign Medical Information Form B. These should be in the possession of KLM no later than 48 hours before departure.
- Passengers suffering from a contagious disease.
- Passengers who, due to illness or a physical condition, display behavior that could potentially influence the comfort and well-being of the other passengers and/or the crew, or that could present a risk to the safety or punctuality of the flight.
- Passengers who will need medical care or will be dependent on specific medical equipment during the flight.
- Passengers who have a medical condition that could result in a life-threatening situation or could require the provision of exceptional medical care for their safety during the flight.
- Passengers who need personal care during the flight (during meals, visiting the toilet, etc.) and will be travelling without a companion.
- Passengers who cannot use the airplane seats in a normal, upright position.
POC – Portable Oxygen Concentrator
Only POC’s that are battery operated or POC’s that are both battery operated and operating on net power are allowed for use on board. To use your own POC on board, please make sure you reserve for the transportation of your POC at least 2 working days prior to departure by calling KLM CARES.
Batteries for a POC
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a power supply on every passenger seat on board, so you need to bring enough fully charged batteries with you. Based on the manufacturer’s estimate of the hours of battery life while the device is in use, and on the information provided by your physician, your batteries need to last for at least 150% of the expected maximum duration of your flight. The batteries will need to be stowed under your seat. Spare batteries are only allowed in your hand baggage, never in your check-in baggage.
- Lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries may contain up to 2 grams of lithium
- Lithium ion batteries may have a watt-hour rating of up to 100 watt/hour
You can find the watt/hour rating on the battery or in the user manual. Spare batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuit, e.g. by taping terminals or by placing them in separate plastic bag or pouch.
Travelling with your assistance dog
If you are bringing your assistance dog onboard with you, you need to meet certain requirements:
- To bring your Guide Dog into the cabin, please download and fill out the Application Form Guide Dog and send the completed form to KLMCARES@KLM.com. Please also bring it with you when checking in at the airport. It is recommended to contact KLM CARES before your departure for confirmation of the transport of your guide dog.
- To bring an Emotional Support dog into the cabin, please always contact KLM CARES at least 48 hours before departure. Download and fill out the Application Form Emotional Support Dog and arrange a signed declaration from your health care provider. Please send the completed form together with the signed declaration to KLMCARES@KLM.com and bring these with you when checking in at the airport.

A trip with the kids is easy to arrange on KLM.com. When booking your flights, simply indicate if your baby or children will travel with you. The applicable reduced fares for kids and/or babies will automatically be calculated. If your child is travelling in a different travel class than you (or another accompanying adult), the Unaccompanied Minor service is mandatory for the child.
Babies 0-1 years
If your child is not yet 2 years old on both the outbound and on the inbound journey, it will travel sitting on your lap. Every adult may travel with 2 babies, but only 1 baby may sit on his/her lap. The other baby will need to have a booked seat of its own. To book a seat for your 0 or 1 year old, please contact us.

- Children of European Union citizens travelling from, to or through countries in the European Union need to carry their own passport or ID card. Having their names entered in their parent’s passport is no longer permitted. This rule does not apply to document holders of the United Kingdom or Ireland.
- For travel to and from South Africa as of 1 June 2015, all children need to bring various documents – regardless if they travel with both parents, with 1 parent, with an accompanying adult or alone. The UK government have abolished Air Passenger Duty (APD) for children aged 12 to 15 departing from a UK airport in Economy Class. Read more about the abolishment of Air Passenger Duty for children under 16.
When travelling to a (sub) tropical destination, be sure to check if your family have all the right vaccinations:
You can bring all necessary medication for your family on KLM flights – just make sure the user’s name is stated on it. If you want to take more than 100 ml/3.4 oz of liquid medication, do not forget to bring a declaration from your doctor.
Should you need special assistance on board or at the airport, you can make a special service request through My Trip or by contacting KLM CARES.
If you are expecting a baby you may travel by air. However once you are 36 weeks into your pregnancy, we advise you not to fly. We also discourage flying during the first week following delivery. If you are expecting more than 1 baby we always advise you to consult your physician first. If you have had complications, you need to have permission to fly from your physician.

Online check-in starts 30 hours before departure (24 hours for flights to and from the United States). We’ll notify you via e-mail.
Holiday season: follow Bluey for family check-in
If you will depart from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the holiday season, look for the desk with the Bluey sign. We’ll help your family check in or drop off your baggage, and get your kids excited with a little surprise.
For kids 2 and older, we have special children’s meals on intercontinental KLM flights – at no extra cost. Make sure to order at least 24 hours before departure, when booking your flight or in My Trip. Dinner will be a real treat, with for example a mini hamburger and fries. The precise menu varies per flight but Bluey will be in every meal box – plus a junior pilot adventure game or junior pilot diploma.
We recommend bringing your own baby food. Any restrictions at the airport on bringing liquids do not apply to your baby food. On intercontinental KLM flights, we have only a few special baby meals available. These are free and do not need to be ordered upfront. Every 0-2 year old receives a free Bluey bib.
On board intercontinental KLM flights, every child 2 and older receives a Bluey play set, containing a memory game and tic tac toe, and items such as pencils, a key cord, card game, sticker, baggage label and more. A Bluey eye mask will help your child get some rest. On European flights children receive a Bluey passport holder and an activity book.
On intercontinental KLM flights, every seat has an inflight entertainment set. Bluey will show your child the way to lots of fun. From movies to games – the flight won’t last long enough to try it all.
On both European and intercontinental KLM flights we allow the use of various types of portable electronic devices, such as handheld games and tablets. You just need to set your device to airplane mode or switch off the cellular service.
You can reserve your seats on the seat map when booking, in My Trip, or when checking in online at KLM.com.
- If you are travelling as a family, regular seats will be assigned to you free of charge at least 4 days before departure. We will try to have you all seated together. If this is not possible, we always guarantee that each child will sit next to an adult in your group. Of course you are welcome to select seats for your family at an earlier stage, to ensure that you are all seated together. In that case, we recommend that you use the paid option for regular seat selection.
- If you are travelling with a baby on your lap (max. 2 years on the return flight) you can reserve seats for yourself and everyone in your booking at a fee. If you do not reserve seats yourself, we will make sure to assign suitable regular seats to your family.
For intercontinental KLM flights, on board carrycots can be reserved via My Trip or by contacting us. These are suitable for babies that are no longer than 65 cm and weigh no more than 10 kg on the day of the trip. Although we’ll do our very best, we cannot always guarantee the availability of a carrycot when you board the aircraft.
For each child you may always bring 1 car/child seat free of charge on KLM flights. If you booked a seat for your child, we recommend that you bring your own car/child seat on board.
- The car/child seat must be able to fit between the armrests of the aircraft seat, which is 42 cm (16.5 in) wide.
- Your child and the child seat need to be secured according to the seat manufacturer’s instructions.
- During take-off and landing child seats may be secured in a rear facing position. At cruising altitude they must be placed forward facing to allow recline of the seat in front.
- A child seat may show no defects and must be approved and visibly certified for air transport.
- You will need to reserve the use of a car/child seat in advance. Please contact KLM Telephone Reservations or your local KLM ticket office.
You may also check in the car/child seat free of charge, in which case above rules do not apply.
If you have booked a seat for your child on a KLM flight, you may also use a Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) on board:
- Your child and the CARES need to be secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- The CARES may show no defects and must be approved for air transport and marked accordingly.
- You will need to reserve the use of the CARES in advance. Please contact KLM Telephone Reservations or your local KLM ticket office.
If your child has its own (booked) seat, it may bring the same amount of hand baggage and check-in baggage as an adult.
For a child younger than 2 years of age who will be travelling on your lap, you may bring:
- 1 piece of hand baggage with baby care items weighing max. 12 kg (26 lbs) and with dimensions max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm (22 x 14 x 10 in).
- 1 piece of check-in baggage of max 10 kg (22 lbs). If your child’s baggage is carried in one of the parents’ check-in baggage, this baggage may weigh no more than 23 kg (50.5 lbs) per piece.
Some of our partner airlines have different baggage rules to our own. Please contact your travel agency or the airline concerned for further details.
For each child you may always bring 1 collapsible buggy free of charge on any KLM flight. If the buggy will not fit under the seat or in the overhead baggage compartment, you can check it in at no extra charge. Where facilities allow for it, you may wheel your child in the tagged buggy to the departure gate. At the gate, the buggy must be handed in for loading. The buggy/pram may have a protective cover but this may not contain any other items.
Unaccompanied Minor service
With the Unaccompanied Minor service, you can rest assured that your child will travel alone safely. Reserving the service is mandatory for children aged 5 up to and including 14 who are travelling alone or who are travelling in a different travel class than their accompanying adult. For children aged 15 up to and including 17 the service is optional.
Before departure and after arrival, our KLM staff, or staff hired by KLM, will accompany your child to and from the aircraft, even in the event of delay. And during the flight our cabin attendants will keep a close look at your child.
During a long transfer at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, your child will stay in our Junior Jet Lounge. Here he/she can have soft drinks, and can enjoy computer games, films, books in various languages and a variety of toys.
We will keep you informed by telephone, e-mail and text message about any changes in your child’s flight schedule. At the end of the journey, we will personally accompany your child to the person you have authorised to collect him/her.
KLM only allows transfers for unaccompanied minors on KLM, AIR FRANCE and Delta Air Lines flights. For questions, please contact KLM Telephone Reservations.
Make sure that your child has all travel documents needed for its entire journey.
- All children travelling alone to or from Curacao (including children aged 15 up to and including 17 years old for whom no Unaccompanied Minor Service has been reserved) need to bring a written confirmation that they are allowed to travel, signed by parent(s) or legal guardian, and also a copy of a valid identity document of a parent or guardian.
- If travelling alone from Mexico a child under 18 years needs to bring proof of parentage such as a birth certificate or legal order of custody. It also needs to bring a notarized statement of one parent or of its legal guardian, in Spanish. The statement is available on the website of the Mexican Immigration (INM) and will be valid for 180 days after validation.
- For travel to and from South Africa as of 1 june 2015, all children need to bring various documents – regardless if they travel with both parents, with 1 parent, with an accompanying adult or alone.

How it works
You need to book a flight for a child travelling alone and the Unaccompanied Minor service at least 24 hours before departure. This service cannot be booked independently of the flight and you can only book these via KLM Telephone Reservations or your travel agent. When booking the service, we will ask for details about your child and your contact information. We recommend filling out a Handling Advice form (in English only) before calling us.
The Unaccompanied Minor service has to be booked at least 24 hours before departure. During online check-in, you will receive a check-in confirmation which you can print and exchange for a boarding pass at the check-in desk at the airport.
A parent or guardian aged 18 years or older needs to bring the child to the check-in desk between 2½ and 1½ hours before departure. At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, this is desk 8 in Departure Hall 1 (European flights) or desk 16 in Departure Hall 2 (intercontinental flights). You need to bring a valid form of identification and stay at the airport until the child’s flight has departed.
To accompany your child during its journey, you need to authorize us by handing in a completely filled out and signed copy of the Handling Advice form at the desk. We recommend downloading and filling it out at home, and bringing 4 copies to the airport. You can also get this form at the check-in desk.
Upon arrival we will hand over your child to the person who was authorised in the Handling Advice form to collect him/her at his/her final destination. The person collecting the child needs to bring a valid form of identification. We will not hand over your child to anyone representing a company or organisation, so please enter an individual person’s name.

Special meals on board
Order your special meal
Special meals are free of charge and served exclusively on intercontinental KLM flights. Make sure to order until 24 hours (Kosher meals: until 48 hours) before departure. Ordering is easy on KLM.com. Simply select your preference when booking, or in My Trip. You can also contact us.
- Baby meal:Baby meal: we recommend always bringing your baby’s food yourself. Any restrictions at the airport on bringing liquids do not apply to baby food. On intercontinental KLM flights, you will receive a complimentary Bluey bib. On those flights, we have only a limited number of sterilized meals available. You can not order these meals upfront.
- Children: for intercontinental KLM flights you can order a Children’s meal free of charge. The children’s meal is packed in a colorful Bluey box.
- Lacto-ovo vegetarian meal: this meal does not contain any meat, meat products or seafood, but may contain dairy products, eggs and vegetables.
- Asian vegetarian meal: spicy vegetarian combinations which may contain a limited amount of dairy products.
- Vegetarian vegan meal: no animal products, eggs or dairy products.
- Diabetic meal: meal containing a balance of complex carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats and low sugar content.
- Low fat meal: this meal does not contain more than 3 gram of total fat per 100 gram food.
- Low salt meal: this meal does not contain highly salted ingredients and no salt is added.
- Gluten intolerant meal: ingredients used for this meal are selected for the absence of gluten. Unfortunately, however, we cannot guarantee that the meal is 100% gluten free.
- Lactose intolerant meal: dairy products are omitted. Unfortunately, however, we cannot guarantee that the meal is 100% lactose free.
Religious meal preferences
- Muslim meal: this meal does not contain pork, pork by-products or food containing alcohol. If this meal contains meat, it comes from ritually slaughtered animals.
- Kosher meal: for this meal, the food is chosen, prepared and served in accordance with Jewish dietary laws and customs. Please order your Kosher meal at least 48 hours before departure.
- Hindu meal: this meal does not contain beef, veal, pork and derived products from these types of meat.
Peanut and nut allergies and other food allergies
Our meals do not contain any whole or ground peanuts or peanut paste, but we cannot guarantee that KLM flights are 100% free of peanut contamination. On intercontinental flights, we serve a mixed nut snack in Business Class and almonds in Economy Class. Unfortunately, we are unable to serve you an alternative. It is also possible that other passengers have taken peanuts or other nuts on board with them.
Don’t forget your allergy medicine
If you have a serious food allergy, we recommend that you take your allergy medicine with you. You can also take your own meal with you, although we unfortunately cannot heat your meal because of safety rules on board. We recommend asking your doctor or KLM Cares about whether you should be travelling.
Travelling with pets
Pets in the cabin
A small cat or dog can be taken into the Economy Class cabin of most KLM flights, and in Business Class on most KLM flights within Europe:
- In a suitable pet travel bag with max. dimensions 46 (length) x 28 (width) x 24 (height) cm, or in a hard kennel with max. dimensions 46 (length) x 28 (width) x 20 (height) cm. Your pet must be able to stand up and lay down comfortably.
- Total weight of pet + travel bag or kennel may be max. 8 kg (18 lbs).
- The kennel must be put under the seat in front of you (therefore exit rows are excluded). It is not allowed to take your pet out of the travel bag or kennel.
Always make a reservation for your pet by telephone. Please note that we have room for a limited number of kennels in the cabin. Therefore we strongly advise you to make the reservation at the latest within 24 hours after you have booked your ticket, but at least 48 hours before departure. Unfortunately it is not possible to bring a pet in the cabin in Business Class on intercontinental KLM flights, because there is no space for your pet under the seat in front of you. Please make sure you have the kennel dimensions and weight available. If you want to bring your assistance dog with you into the cabin, please make sure that you meet the requirements.
Pets as check-in baggage
Your cat or dog may travel as check-in baggage in a ventilated part of the aircraft:
- In a kennel that complies with IATA rules – for example those of the ‘Sky’ and ‘Vari’ brands. See below for precise rules for your pet’s kennel.
- Total weight of your pet and kennel combined may be max. 75 kg (165 lbs).
- Two adult animals of comparable size that are compatible, up to 14 kg (30 lbs) each. Or three animals up to six months old from the same litter, up to 14 kg (30 lbs) each.
- On all KLM flights (and on KLM Cityhopper flights of less than 2 hours). Between 1 November and 31 March each year, pets cannot be taken in the hold of Fokker aircraft because it cannot be heated.
We accept a maximum of three pets per passenger as check-in baggage. Above that limit, pets must be shipped as cargo.
Always make a reservation for your pet by telephone. We strongly advise you to do so at the latest within 24 hours after you have booked your ticket, but at least 48 hours before departure. Please note that each passenger may bring up to 3 pets but that we have room for a limited number of kennels in the hold.
Snub-nosed animals such as pugs, boxers, bulldogs, Pekinese and Persian cats can have trouble breathing during the flight due to high temperatures and stress. To ensure their well-being, most snub-nosed animals may therefore only be transported in the cabin or as cargo. Unfortunately, we do also not transport English and French bulldogs, Boston terriers and pugs in the hold or as cargo.
Please make sure you have the kennel dimensions and weight available.
Contact KLM Telephone Reservations
When transporting your pet as check-in baggage, its kennel needs to comply with several rules:
- The kennel must have a fiberglass or rigid plastic shell. Wooden, metal bar or welded wire mesh kennels are not allowed.
- The wheels must be removed or if retractable they must be taken off or blocked with duct tape.
- The door must have a centralized locking system which fastens both locks on top and at the bottom of the door. (A)
- The door hinge and locking pins must engage the container by at least 1.6cm (5/8 in.) beyond the horizontal extrusions above and below the door opening where the pins are fitted. (B)
- The two parts of the kennel must be joined by bolts. Any other locking system is strictly forbidden. (C)
- The kennel must be large enough for your pet to stand up without touching the top; to be able to turn around easily and to lie down in a natural position.
- The kennel must have a blanket, newspaper, or other absorbent material on floor. Please note that straw is not allowed.

Pets as freight
Your pet should be transported as freight by AIR FRANCE-KLM Cargo if:
- Your pet and kennel weigh more than 75 kg (165 lbs).
- The kennel is larger than 292 cm/115 inches (l + w + h). On some types of aircraft, the kennel must not be larger than 247 cm/97 inches (l + w + h). Contact your travel agent or call us for advice.
- Your pet is not travelling on the same flight as you are.
- Your pet is travelling to a country whose authorities allow the transportation of pets as freight only.

Travel documents and health certificates
To find out which documents are required and which rules apply to transporting your pet, we recommend consulting the embassies of the country of departure and the country of destination.

Special rules apply to service animals which have been trained to assist passengers with disabilities, or rescue teams. You can request more information from KLM Cares.
At the airport, we will use a checklist for your pet, travel documents and kennel.

Prepare your pet for travel:
- Allow 5 days before the flight for your pet to get used to its kennel.
- Give your pet a light meal and/or water at the latest 2 hours before departure and walk your dog just before. During the flight your pet will not be given any food or water.
- Tranquillizing your pet should only be done in consultation with a veterinarian.
The check-in process for pets may take some time. We recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before your scheduled departure time, and bringing a filled out form for transporting your pet as check-in baggage.
